Composer Robert Fokkens’ new opera Bhekzizwe tells the life story of a South African Zulu man who grows up during the final years of apartheid and moves to the UK.
Originally intended for a Welsh tour, Bhekzizwe was reinvented for film during lockdown and recorded at Chapter Arts Centre, where it screens here as part of Vale of Glamorgan Festival.
Exploring questions of identity, race, immigration, parenthood and culture, it takes the form of monodrama – meaning it is acted and sung by a single performer (baritone Themba Mvula).
Robert collaborated with a wide creative team to develop Bhekzizwe – Mkhululi Mabija (librettist), Njabulo Madlala (baritone), Ben Davis (director) and Brad Caleb Lee (designer).
