In the presence of the composer, the stunning Estonian Philharmonic choir join forces with the BBC National Orchestra of wales in Arvo Pärt’s setting of a meditation on the life of the patron saint of music. The concert opens with a world premiere – a new orchestral work by Pärt, specially commissioned for the Vale of Glamorgan Festival with the generous support of a number of individual benefactors – and culminates in a performance of Symphony No. 4, his first to be written for nearly 40 years. Another world premiere, the new Piano Concerto by UK-based American Arlene Sierra, completes the programme.
