Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic mirrors the last moments of the doomed voyage and reports of the band playing the hymn ‘Autumn’ as the ship went down. Refrains from the hymn weave in and out of the work as waves of sound gradually build, vividly evoking the massive bulk of the vessel and the ocean that swallowed it. The result is heart-achingly intimate and direct.
