It took another ten years after the already delayed completion of his third quartet for Górecki finally to feel able to release his aching lament to the world, and this massive work is one of his most powerful and consoling pieces: 'when people die, songs are sung.' Songs also map the spiritual journey travelled by Metcalf’s ecstatic songlines.
