The distinctive Magnard Ensemble bring Judith Weir’s airs, jigs and reels to life in this lunchtime concert.
A wind quintet, the Magnards are the second group to feature in this year’s Festival. Their combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon gives them access to a range of rarely-heard repertoire.
Here they perform Airs From Another Planet by Weir, the current Master of the Queen’s Music and the first woman to hold the post. The Airs take traditional Scottish musical traditions and project them into the future, making them almost unrecognisable from the original forms.
We’ve also commissioned Featured Composer Sarah Jenkins to write a brand new piece for the Magnard Ensemble, which premieres in this concert. Siwan Rhys joins us again to play a suite of short Judith Weir pieces for solo piano.
Pre-concert talk – 12.45pm – Judith Weir and John Metcalf.
We will not be making any charge for the 2021 performances but encourage you to support the festival’s artists and future by making a donation. Thank you in advance for this much needed support. Please go to our Virgin Money Giving page.
