Tredegar Town Band

Tredegar Town Band

Tredegar Town Band have a reputation as one of best brass band working internationally today. For anyone unfamiliar with the extreme technicality and ability of UK brass band culture, I urge you to listen Tredegar’s competitive performances (or UK Championship brass banding in general). It’s very, very different to typical classical music – the standard of playing is terrifyingly high, performed under serious scrutiny, and intensely polished. With the brilliant Ian Porthouse at the helm, we’re excited to welcome the band to the VoGF this year. The band will be presenting a program of exceptional works including Bramwell Tovey’s Nine Daies Wonder (a really exceptional piece of music), 2 new commissions from David John Roche and Benjamin Wallace, and fabulous works by Judith Bingham and Gavin Higgins (whose Concerto Grosso for the band just won both RPS and Sky Arts awards).

The Vale of Glamorgan Festival and Tredegar Town Band have also been working with 6 mentees in the creation of new, ambitious music for the band. Designed to be different to traditional composition schemes, Tredegar Town Band gave our mentees unprecedented access to their musical resources. This afforded us a huge amount of space with which to experiment. Opportunities like this are incredibly rare to cultivate but, with the openness, technical ability, and progressive thinking of a band like Tredegar, such approaches (which yield incredibly positive results) can be made into a reality. A testament to the exceptional ability and commitment of Welsh musicians.

Tredegar Band’s grit is further reflected in the programming during the festival. They consistently confront themselves with expressively and technically difficult music – their only objective is to provide the highest standard of performance they are possibly able to. Their skill and commitment means they never fall short.
