Remembering John Tavener, 1944-2013

In 2014′s festival we remember John Tavener, enjoy a choral drama from Tarik O’Regan, and welcome back Ensemble MidtVest.

Paul Hillier conducts Chamber Choir Ireland, Juice makes some Literary Connections, and we enter David Pountney’s Operatic World. Come join us.

The programme for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Concert on Saturday 17 May has changed.  The concert will now include a performance of Tavener’s 2007 Requiem alongside The Protecting Veil.  The premiere was given at Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral – a centrepiece of the city’s year as European Capital of Culture.  The work is a potent symbol of religious striving for unity rather than division as Tavener blends the traditional Catholic Mass with the Qur’an and Sufi and Hindu texts.

Chinese Links

13th February 2014

Our links with China continue to prosper.  In December, Artistic Director, John Metcalf, was invited to the National Centre of Performing Arts in Beijing to adjudicate a major composition competition.  We’re delighted to announce that the winning work, The Cloud on the Wishful Side by Xiao Ying will be performed at this year’s festival in the concert given by BBC National Orchestra of Wales on Wednesday 14 May at BBC Hoddinott Hall.
