We are incredibly proud to announce the 2023 Vale of Glamorgan Festival. This year we are featuring works by 36 living composers (and counting!) from all over the world. We hold firm and continue to develop our commitments, ensuring that we are always representing exceptional musical talent – at home and internationally. We have lots of wonderful performances waiting for you.
First up, we have the honour of welcoming the amazing Canadian Violinist Mark Fewer to Wales. He will be performing – amongst many wonderful pieces – Bramwell Tovey’s immense Nine Daies Wonder with Tredegar Town Band (who are fresh off their RPS and Sky Arts Awards victories). Tovey’s combination of brass band intensity, virtuosic violin playing, and theatrics is like nothing else, make sure you hear it!
For our following event, Wales’ own Huw Watkins will be performing a series of beautiful works at All Saints Church. This program – in conjunction with Mark fewer – will feature gorgeous solo piano works, solo violin works, and works for violin and piano. It is a brilliant chance to hear Lynne Plowman’s Lullaby for Ianto, Steph Power’s Dreamtides, and Sarah Lianne Lewis’s Until the thread breaks. A brilliant snapshot of Welsh music, with some beautiful international works represented too.
Speaking of fabulous Welsh musicians, Sinfonia Cymru will be bringing the music of Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, Augusta Read Thomas, Lera Auerbach, and Gabriele Lena Frank to Penarth Pier Pavilion – complete with a pre-concert talk from Augusta Read Thomas. A collection of leading American composers and a brilliant showcase of music makers living, working, and playing music today.
Finally, it is our pleasure to welcome the extraordinary Cello Octet Amsterdam. They’re bringing a huge range of wonderful music from Kate Moore and Philip Glass, to Theo Loevendie and Sofia Gubaidulina, to Arvo Pärt and Kinan Azmeh, and to a new work by our own Artistic Director, John Metcalf. A beautiful, rich, and internationally-facing way to end an ambitious, exciting festival.

The world premiere of a new work by the critically acclaimed young composer which was commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Festival last year.
Cello Octet Amsterdam is committed to the belief that musicians are at the heart of society and have a responsibility to contribute to social and political discussions. As a result, the Octet regularly enters collaborations with composers, theatre-makers, choreographers and social organizations as a means of exploring broader themes and ideas. Instant Happiness and Instant Love (co-productions with Via Berlin), dealt with topics including consumer society and human trafficking while more recently, the Octet has been focusing on themes of diversity and migration.
